LA MONSTERRATO 2023: THE COMPLETE PROGRAMME
– The MONSTERRATO weekend will take place from 2 to 3 September 2023, in the magical days of the harvest, and will be based in #Quattordio (Alessandria, Piedmont).

FRIDAY 1 SEPTEMBER: from 2 to 6 pm number pick-up at the Quattordio sports field. Payment 10 Euros for daily insurance for holders of a medical certificate of fitness for competition that are not registered

SATURDAY 2 SEPTEMBER: Second edition of LA MONSTERRATO RACE, 16th event of the Trek UCI Gravel World Series, a world circuit taking place in 4 continents. The MONSTERRATO RACE, valid as a qualifying test for the World Championship, where you can choose between 2 routes, based on the age of the participant, with a mixed surface of white roads, dirt roads and asphalt:
CUNIOLO/GERBI ROUTE, about 69 km
ELISO RIVERA ROUTE, about 126 km
The race is reserved for gravel bikes, mtb, cyclocross bikes with large and knobby tyres. Participation in the MONSTERRATO RACE is possible only for holders of a sports medical certificate of fitness for competitive cycling

SUNDAY 3 SEPTEMBER: 7/a LA MONSTERRATO-STRADE BIANCHE MONFERRATO, self-managed cycle touring, randonnée type on the same two routes that had hosted the competitive event the day before. Free French departure between 9 and 10.
Participation in the Monsterrato-Strade Bianche Monferrato is reserved for gravel bikes, mtb, cyclocross bikes with wide tires and e-bikes. Registration is possible only for holders of a sports medical certificate of fitness for competitive cycling

HUTCHINSON RANXO GRAVEL FOR PERFECT GRAVEL CONDITIONS IN CATALONIA

The UCI Gravel qualifier in northern Spain this weekend (June 4th) is ready to host 709 riders from 22 different countries in Ponts on a splendid course in rural Catalonia for a challenging 166 race with 2000m of elevation.

Last year, the race was a great success with Carlos Verona (Movistar) winning the men’s race in the ideal gravel paradise. Marta Romeu was the female winner in 2022. Curious if their average speeds of respectively 34.7 and 30.2 km/h can be beaten.

Apart from the 166km qualifier distance, there are also shorter courses of 67 and 104km which are not qualifiers.

THE REASON BEHIND THE MONSTERRATO

Basso Monferrato is a surprising place, with the typical beauty of a winegrowing landscape. Here in recent decades nature has taken back all the spaces left free by man. Fascinating, but also insidious for the survival of many small villages threatened by abandonment. Our mission is to give oxygen to this small ancient world, also protected by UNESCO, which is located just 50 minutes by highway from Milan, Turin, Genoa and Milan airport (Malpensa).

We can help this world with the only thing we can do: by organizing cycling events that allow hundreds of cyclists from other regions of Italy and abroad to discover this land every year. To help Monferrato, more people should discover what the “mal di Monferrato” is, that is the need to return as soon as possible. If you like the mission, if you feel it a little “in your gut”, write down these dates:

– SATURDAY 2 September 2023, for those who like the flame of agonism 2nd edition of La Monsterrato Gravel Race, 16th event of the Trek UCI Gravel World Series and the only Italian qualifying round for the UCI Gravel World Championship scheduled in Veneto on 7 and 8 October. The Monsterrato Gravel Race is open to gravelbikes, mtb, cyclocross bikes with enlarged and possibly knobby section tyres.

– SUNDAY 3 September 2023, for those who love slow and gentle cycling, 7/a La Monsterrato-Strade Bianche Monferrato, self-managed randonnée type pedaling open to gravelbikes, mtb, cyclocross bikes with section tires enlarged and possibly tessellated and also to e-bikes.

TIFFANY CROMWELL AND CONNOR SWIFT SHOW THEIR POWER IN THE GRALLOCH

The very first UCI Gravel event in the UK in the tiny little town of Gatehouse of Fleet in Scotland was an instant success as more than 1000 riders showed up to ride the splendid 113km course in the Galloway Forest Park.

Remarkable guest at the start was F1 driver Valtteri Bottas who came directly from the cancelled Imola Grand Prix to join the race in support of his girlfriend Tiffany Cromwell. He did well himself with a 114th place overall.

The women’s race started as first and it was Cromwell taking the win for a second week in a row after also winning the Seven event last week in her home country Australia. Tiffany had almost 10 minutes to Amelia Mitchell (GBR) while Svenja Betz (GER) got overall third.

The men started in different start waves with the younger males starting 40 minutes after the women. Connor Swift (Ineos Grenadiers) got away for a solo break in the second half of the race winning 7 minutes ahead of Sam Culverwell (GBR) who beated reigning M19-34 World Champion Kevin Panhuyzen in the sprint.

The course in the Galloway Forest was one of the most splendid race circuits in the series with wide open forest roads going up and down in a very remote area.

Contribuire a far conoscere il Monferrato, già patrimonio dell’Umanità #UNESCO per il paesaggio vitivinicolo e gli infernot; contribuire a far conoscere quelle decine di caratteristici borghi medievali che lottano per sopravvivere all’abbandono tra filari di colline che si inseguono a vista d’occhio. Anche se ciò, in alcuni casi, finisce per penalizzare gli organizzatori riducendo a volte drasticamente il numero degli iscritti, la ricerca della maggior sicurezza e traquillità personale possibile vengono prima di tutto.

Per partecipare alla La Monsterrato Gravel Race e alla 7/a La Monsterrato-Strade Bianche Monferrato occorre quindi il certificato medico di idoneità alla pratica del ciclismo agonistico.
